These are the qualities that we look for in a potential Longacre staffer. To complete the Longacre experience, it is essential for our staff to have these qualifications.
- Experience working with kids, specifically experience working with teenagers - They must have the ability to communicate and be comfortable with teenagers. Longacre is a place where teenagers can test themselves in unique ways, supported by caring and qualified adults who set limits and provide positive role models.
- Competence in a variety of outdoor activities - Trips that offer biking, SCUBA diving and skiing/boarding rely on the expertise of the leaders, so experience in these skill areas is essential. It is helpful but not necessary to have experience in other activities. We have Specialists and/or contracted staff to supervise these activities.
- Very good physical condition - Leading a trip is an extremely demanding job. It is important for our staffers to be physically fit and emotionally ready to deal with stressful situations.
- Proper Expectations - You won't be on vacation. Surfing in the Pacific or rafting the Kennebec or climbing at Smith Rocks sound like great fun. But during the summer, your job is to be there for the kids first and “notch your belt” later. Trip leaders and assistants are on duty 24/7.
- Embracing our trip leading philosophy and commitment to group. If you accept our basic premises and have the strength of character to make it all happen, then you may have found a match with a summer at Longacre Expeditions!
To provide the best experience for the kids involved in the Longacre Experience, we do require that our staff have the following prerequisites.
- Staff must be 21 years old to apply.
- Our staff should have certification in the following areas: Wilderness EMT, Wilderness First Aid, Wilderness First Responder, CPR, Lifeguard Training, and/or SCUBA (Open Water Diver).
- All trip leaders must have either Wilderness First Responder or Wilderness EMT certifications and all assistant trip leaders must have a minimum of Wilderness First Aid and CPR.
- There are a few specific trips where Wilderness First Responder certification and/or Foreign Language requirements must be fulfilled.
- Lifeguard training is required on all of our water-based trips.
